Bass, Largemouth
Found throughout North America. Considered the most popular freshwater gamefish. This is partly due to the largemouth bass's attitude and willingness to explosively attack a lure. Largemouth bass learn very fast that a lure is not food and may not attack the same lure twice. The mouth of the largemouth extends at least to, if not past the rear edge of the eyes. Popular lures include plastics, jigs, crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Live bait includes nightcrawlers, minnows, frogs of crawfish.

Bass, Smallmouth
Although not as widespread as the largemouth, the smallmouth is also found in all states. Smallmouth attain weights of up to 12 pounds, and is easily distinguished from the largemouth by its clearly connected dorsal fins, and the upper jaw bone which extends only to about the middle of the eye. May be caught on a wide variety of natural and artificial bait or lures, including crankbaits, jigs, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, soft plastics, etc. Live bait includes nightcrawlers, minnows, hellgrammites, crayfish and leeches.

Bass, Striped
Found mostly in the northern US. Also found in saltwater. The striped bass has 7 or 8 black stripes that run along each side of the silvery body. This bass will consume all types of fish and bait.

Bass, White
Widely distributed throughout river systems of the Mississippi and Ohio valleys and the Great Lakes. Look like striped bass but is shorter and stockier with a smaller head. Lures to use include crankbaits, spinnerbaits. Live bait would include worms and minnows.

Bluegill
A member of the sunfish family. Found throughout the US. A popular fish, caught with live bait, flies, etc. They mostly bite on vibrant colors, chiefly at dawn and dusk. Some of the easiest baits are worms, white bread or a corn kernel. They are notorious for nibbling, or pecking and are always stealing bait off your hook. Maximum length of 16" (whoa) . Excellent tasting fish.

Bullhead
Related to the catfish, and are able to thrive in waters that are low in oxygen, turbid or very warm. They are nocturnal, preferring to feed at night. They will eat almost anything from grains, insects, dead or living fish and crustaceans. Usually average 1 - 2 pounds. For fishing purposes, considered a rough fish.

Carp
Also considered a rough fish. Difficult to hook. Carp can grow to considerable size. Best fished with a nightcrawler.

Catfish
There are several types of catfish. These fish are usually nocturnal and feed primarily at night. A popular method of fishing is with stink baits...a concoction of different parts that the catfish is attracted to....sometimes tied into a little package with a small netting and fished on or near the bottom of the water.

Crappie
Members of the sunfish family. Highly regarded gamefish and some consider it the best tasting freshwater fish. May be caught several ways...jigs, small crankbaits, minnows, nightcrawlers, insects, etc. Schooling fish...usually when you find one you'll find several.

Musky
A large freshwater fish, and the largest of the pike family. Musky can attain lengths of 2 - 5 feet and weights of over 60 pounds. Musky will prey on anything that fits in their mouths. Their diet consists of fish but also includes frogs, ducklings, crayfish, snakes, mice and other small mammals. Our favorite lures are different types of topwater - NOTHING beats a musky strike at a topwater bait!!!!

Northern Pike
The second largest member of the pike family, next to the musky. Northern pike grow relatively large, up to 59 inches and over 60 pounds. These fish also are very exciting to catch, and like musky, have large teeth, so care must be taken to release them. Lures include bucktails, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, plastics. The most popular live bait is minnows.

Perch
Perch are a very popular panfish and are considered very good eating. Some perch grow to 5 pounds but typically are around 1 pound. Spinners work, but the most popular way to fish is float fishing, using minnows, worms, maggots, bread and crayfish.

Salmon
There are several species of salmon. Some live exclusively in fresh water, some born in freshwater then move to the oceans, returning to spawn in freshwater. Salmon is considered to be healthy, due to the fish's high protein, Omega-3 fatty acids and high vitamin D-10.

Sucker, Redhorse
A rough fish, usually found in creeks and rivers. A popular pastime with kids. Get a nightcrawler or worm and a bobber.

Sturgeon
One of the oldest families of bony fish in existence. These fish can grow in excess of 7 feet. Sometimes people catch sturgeon while fishing for other species, and have the fight of a lifetime.

Trout, Brook
The brook trout is native to small streams, creeks, lakes and ponds. Very popular trout for fly-fishing.

Trout, Brown
Young brown trout feed on insects and other small invertebrates. Larger browns are active predators of fish, and will also feed on small animals that fall into the water. Lures include flies, spoons, spinners, jigs, plastic worm imitations, live or dead bait fish.

Trout, Lake
Lake trout are the largest of the charr family, the record weighing over 100 pounds. These are a slow growing fish and like cold, oxygen-rich water.

Trout, Rainbow
Predators with a varied diet. Not as aggressive as the brown or lake trout. Insects, smaller fish, crayfish, other crustaceans are items found in a rainbow's diet.

Walleye, Sauger
Walleye grow to about 30 inches, but you could catch a larger one. Walleyes have excellent low-light vision, and tend to feed more at dawn and dusk, on cloudy or overcast days, and under choppy conditions when light penetration into water is disrupted. Popular fishing techniques are jigging, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, or minnow, leeches, nightcrawlers under bobbers or just off bottom. Considered an excellent meal.

Saugers resemble walleyes, but are usually smaller and will tolerate waters of a higher turbidity. They also have a distinctly spotted dorsal fin, rough skin over the gill and are generally more brassy or darker in color.

How-to Quick Links

What are you fishing for?

Depending on the type of fish you are going after, there are numerous rods and reels that will work. Remember, you do not have to have a special rod for each type of fish. There are rods made for certain types of fish, but lots of rods can be multi-purpose rods, used on several species. Some larger fish, such as musky should be fished with special rods, to ensure you don't break your equipment and to not hurt the fish.
