We won't be covering all types of fishing here, but here are some basic types of fishing.

Still Fishing

Anyone can still fish and you can still fish anywhere you find water to fish in. Still fishing is basically presenting your bait to the fish and waiting for the fish to come and take your bait. You can still fish with your bait on the bottom of the lake, river, etc., or suspended in the water, off the bottom, either under a bobber of directly from the fishing pole. You can still fish during any part of the day or night, and during most seasons.

Casting

Casting involves using the weight of the lure or bait to pull the line out into the water behind the bait. Using your rod you swing the rod, with the bait attached, swinging behind you and quickly bringing it forward, releasing the line, so the lure is propelled out into the water.

Bait Casting and Spin Casting are the two types of casting you'll see. Spin casting is easier to use and can cast light and heavy lures. Spin casting reels are typically found underneath the fishing rod. Bait casting reels are found on the top side of the fishing pole. Bait casting comes in closed and open reels. With closed reels, you press a button and then release the button to let the line go out. Fishing with an open reel takes some practice to get used to, but once it is learned it is a very fun way to fish. To cast with open bait casting reels you press a button then hold the line with your thumb. You lift your thumb when casting, but keep your thumb close to the line and when the cast is about done you slow the spinning spool of line with your thumb. When fishing for larger fish such as musky, bait casting reels are the norm.

Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is different from other types of fishing. When fly fishing you do not use the weight of the lure to cast the line, but rather you cast the line. The lure is made of various materials, made to resemble an insect. These lures are too small to cast and pull out line, so you must cast the line, taking the lure with the line. Fly line is heavier than other types of fishing line and can therefore be cast.

Jigging

Jigging involves casting your jig out in the water, letting it fall to the bottom, then using your rod tip to raise the bait from the bottom. Then let if fall back to the bottom. Jigging can be done in any direction, can be done with or without live bait and lures come in a variety of sizes.

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is constantly becoming more and more popular. Part of the reason for this is the constant improvements in cold weather clothing, portable fishing shelters and fish finding equipment. When ice fishing, you fish through a hole drilled into the ice extended to the water. If the weather is severe, you can fish inside a portable fish shelter to protect you from the cold.

Enjoy

Whichever type of fishing that you do, you need to enjoy yourself. That's what we feel fishing is all about. If at first you have nothing but trouble while fishing, try again.

Fast Fact

When you're jigging, remember that the majority of strikes will occur as the lure is dropped, or when it is falling, rather than when it is lifted. Pay attention and try to keep in contact with the jig at all times. Keep an eye on your line for any signs of unnatural movement.
